Summary
Beauvericin Cyclic ionophoric mycotoxin with antimicrobial and anticancer activity.
Details
Beauvericin is a cyclic hexadepsipeptide mycotoxin produced by Fusarium and other filamentous fungi. It acts as a cation-selective ionophore, disrupting ion homeostasis and inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and apoptosis. Beauvericin exhibits antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, insecticidal and anticancer activities, while also being recognized as an emerging food and feed contaminant with documented in vitro and in vivo toxicological effects.
Mechanism
Ionophoric cyclic hexadepsipeptide that forms cation-selective complexes, disrupting membrane ion homeostasis and inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis.
Primary Target
Cellular membrane ion gradients
Pathway
Ion homeostasis; Mitochondrial apoptosis
